Special Exhibition Shoka! When Western music arrived … Music and Society in the Meiji Period Schedule： 11 July 〜 30 August 2020
School songs (shoka) started to be taught in schools during the Meiji Period. Although these songs followed the rules of Western music, they are now so familiar that they are regarded as part of traditional Japanese culture. This exhibition shows how Western music was introduced in the Meiji Period with a focus on school songs.
