Story of non-humans
Hyakki Yagyo Emaki(Night Parade of One Hundred Tools)

(Night Parade of One Hundred Demons)

99 monsters of different shapes and forms are illustrated. The monsters that extend from right to left seem as though they are marching on the paper. In addition to those who look like demons, there are also many monsters in the painting who take on the form of personified tools and animals. This work is presumed to be a reproduction from the latter part of the Edo Period, judging from the quality of the materials and the state of preservation.

With miscellaneous daily utensils and tools used by craftsmen as the motif, such utensils and tools are transformed and drawn as 35 playful monsters. As a “winnowing basket” and “miso strainer” can be seen in the drawing, the subject is one that is based on the lives of commoners in the Edo Period. After the years pass, the tools become artifact spirits, and the feelings of the people during that time are captured brilliantly.
