Kiyohime, who fell in love with a visiting priest named Anchin, pursued him and followed him to Dojo-ji in Kii Province (present-day Wakayama Prefecture). This story takes a dreadful turn as Kiyohime, who had turned into a snake, finds Anchin, who was hiding inside the temple bell, and winds herself around the bell, spewing out flames of fire. This picture scroll is structured so that each of the illustrated scenes are connected together, leading the audience to the end of the story through a series of images mixed with words that are very colloquial.
