Sumiyoshi Monogatari （Tale of Sumiyoshi）
Himegimi, who was bullied by her stepmother, escaped to the Sumiyoshi Shrine, together with the son of the wet nurse. They then lived a happy marriage through a miracle of Hase Kannon (present-day Nara Prefecture). The original manuscript of the Sumiyoshi Monogatari was thought to have been written in the latter half of the 10th century (Heian Period), but it is recognized that an adaptation was made at a later date. Although it is small, this book is opulent, and this kind of illustrated manuscript is called “Nara-ehon” (illustrated story books from the late-Muromachi to early-Edo periods).
